My Favorite Scene: Tarsem Finds Common Ground Between Man Bites Dog and an Episode of Cops

This week, Movieline’s favorite honey badger of directors, Tarsem (The Fall, The Cell), unveils his spin on Greek mythology in Immortals, a fantasy actioner that blends artistic influences as vast and varied as Caravaggio, classics, and Henry Cavill’s abs. So who better to invite to a round of My Favorite Scene than the visionary filmmaker, who managed to pinpoint the uncanny cinematic parallels between the 1992 Belgian mockumentary Man Bites Dog, a Cannes Film Festival awardee, and that one episode from the “brilliant” first season of COPS. First, Tarsem set the stage with a scene from Man Bites Dog, Rmy Belvaux, Andr Bonzel, and Benot Poelvoorde’s violent mockumentary about a film crew shadowing a serial killer: “I remember this because I was completely blown away by this,” Tarsem began. “The set-up is there’s a serial killer; he takes you to a particular place and he goes, ‘Come with me’ — it’s like a mockumentary, which now, a decade and a half later, is such a dead topic with everything from the Paranormals to everything, everybody just shoots those. But this was a thing I was always showing film students: Try not to compete with Hollywood, try to look at this, this person made a billion-dollar idea with very little money. In this, they’re doing kind of a mockumentary on a serial killer and he takes them to a place and says, ‘I want you to meet somebody.’” “Cut to the serial killer talking to the camera,” he continued. “Big, BIG gestures! Pointing, pointing, pointing. You hear his voice like you’re hearing him from 100, 200 feet away. He goes [whispering wildly], and on the main sound you’re hearing [wheezing, heavy breathing] and somebody’s walking. You see while you’re talking to him that 100 feet away is the overweight sound man, coming towards you. [Laughs] So his boom is there, but his voice is here, and it takes forever for the guy to come up close to you!” Tarsem remembered a similar scene of aural interruption in a Nicolas Cage-Coen brothers classic. “[It raised] the hair on the back of my neck… and I think in a filmic way you have the same thing in the Coen brothers’ Raising Arizona. I saw it done identically somewhere else, but in that what happens is, he runs through a supermarket and all the tension, tension, and it breaks to la-di-dah music, then tension, tension.” But wait! The scene that came closest to approximating the brilliance of Man Bite Dog came not in a film, but in the syndicated crime reality show COPS, in an episode (which, sadly, doesn’t seem to be available online) that presumably pre-dated the film and aired circa 1989. “The one that I like, I saw in a COPS episode,” Tarsem recalled. “ This was in the first season of COPS. They were brilliant! And then somebody got the stupid idea of saying, why don’t we make it sophisticated and get one of those big lights, with a separate sound guy. It was so dreadful because people would be natural and suddenly you’d have this, ting! Light comes on. It was like, what the fuck?” “So it was one of those scenes, but they were running behind with a guy and the sound guy got separated. The camera ran behind the guy who the cops were chasing, and the sound man ran through 7-11. So while they were running, chasing this guy the music was like the Hindi movie music the guy was listening to in the 7-11, and they arrive in the back and suddenly they were chasing this guy. I said, two movies that are almost hand-heldy — the serial killer movie and this episode of COPS — kind of did the same thing. It was just magical. The two things you never want to have happen: The guy you’re talking to you — you want his sound, not the sound of the guy taking a piss in the urinal.” Stay tuned for Movieline’s full interview with Tarsem, and read more My Favorite Scenes here. Producers appeared to obtain their method of doing things. I am not sure why they wouldnt allow me to be me, he stated Tuesday. Scherzinger, former person in the Pussycat Dolls, required his complaint towards the shows producers and returned within 24 hours by having an offer, based on Haygood: He'd be returned on Thursdays results show if he decided to return for that season finale. Neither Scherzinger nor Fox immediately taken care of immediately demands for comment. Haygood stated he was contractually certain to remain on the program and wouldnt have quit, but he appreciated the out he was handed regardless of the $5 million record contract that would go to the champion. They (producers) required the chance to chop me, to allow me just fly and do things the way in which I wish to do them, stated Haygood, who stated he conveyed just with Scherzinger and didnt talk straight to the producers, including series creator Simon Cowell. Cowell left Foxs The American Idol Show so he could launch the U.S. version from the X Factor, his hit British singing contest. Fox gave X Factor a deluxe marketing launch however the show hasnt resided as much as the 20 million weekly audiences predicted by Cowell, with 12.a million watching last Tuesdays show. Although Haygood stated he was prepared to play along before he was cut, he made the decision he owed it to themself and fans he earned through X Step to tell his side of occasions. Younger crowd expressed frustration with just how much the show outlined his difficult conditions, including living couch to couch in Memphis since he lost his the place to find foreclosures in 2007. I had been treated a lot more like a personality than a painter. This really is TV, they need a great story, you realize? However they required might I did not get the opportunity to become a painter. I had been doing a few things i would not do, he stated. For that roughly two days he is at La, he was compensated $250 for expenses, another $500 for that live show and cab fare for his ride towards the airport terminal after he was cut, Haygood stated. He voiced appreciation for that exposure X Factor gave him, which put him in touch with people of his old band. They're in talks for any comeback tour and could show up on the growing season-ender of X Factor, he stated. Icons & Innovators: Denis Leary and Michael J. Fox

Denis Leary & Michael J. Fox "You want us to talk to each other?" Denis Leary jokes, relaxing with his old pal Michael J. Fox. "This is really hard, because we don't have a lot to say to each other. Actually, we do, but it's mostly hockey talk." In fact, Leary, 54, and Fox, 50, share a lot more than their love for the Boston Bruins: They're devoted dads and husbands (Fox married Family Ties costar Tracy Pollan in 1988, one year before Leary wed writer Ann Lembeck) with their own charities: the Leary Firefighters Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Fox's Emmy-winning role as a hedonistic paraplegic on Leary's recently wrapped drama Rescue Me reignited his acting career, leading to his irreverent turns as an unscrupulous lawyer on The Good Wife and as himself, poking fun at his Parkinson's, on Curb Your Enthusiasm. One thing's for sure: These two can't curb their enthusiasm for each other. TV Guide Magazine: This is for our series "Icons & Innovators." I'll let you two decide who's the Icon and who's the Innovator.Fox: He's the Innovator.Leary: Now that f---ing sucks! TV Guide Magazine: How do you feel about the Icon label?Fox: It's more the stuff I've been involved in. Alex Keaton and Marty McFly are iconic characters, and certain people think Teen Wolf is an iconic character for very different reasons.Leary: He's way too humble. A couple years ago, my kids were watching Back to the Future. I remember when I first saw the movie, and these kids were laughing at the same spots. This goes back to his timing. You either have it or you don't when it comes to comedy. Fast-forward years later, and take into account the Parkinson's, and he does Curb, where it's dark and funny and playing with who he is. Not a lot of people can or will do that.Fox: That's what I've been saying about what you do, I'm so amazed...Leary: I was hoping you'd suck up.Fox: I don't know that it's sucking up. I don't want anything. But you set me free on Rescue Me and let me do stuff I've been carrying around for a long time. And you inspire me because you don't give a s--t. And I give too much of a s--t a lot of times. Like getting into a fight with Rush Limbaugh [after he accused Fox of faking his Parkinson's symptoms]. Like, it's OK if someone doesn't like you, if it's that person.Leary: Yeah, especially!Fox: And it's OK to piss some people off and take some chances. And right from the outset, Rescue Me, at a time when the world was rightly honoring firefighters and putting them up on a pedestal for very good reasons, you said, "I get that, but they're real people, too. They have real lives and flaws." I don't think I've ever done anything as brave and innovative as that.Leary: I knew Michael long enough to know he could do the role on Rescue Me in terms of surprising people. That's the thing at our age. You get better as you get older because you have more stuff to pull from, right?Fox: Yeah. And now I don't care about playing characters that people don't necessarily like. They're not heroic, like the character on The Good Wife...Leary: That's a great character.Fox: I don't have a moral read on that character. It's funny that people react so strongly, like I'm an evil guy. And I go, "Really? He's just got his M.O." TV Guide Magazine: What's the secret to your marital successes?Leary: When you're a famous guy, quite often people look past the person standing next to you. In both of our cases, she's actually the person who deserves most of the credit. Because when you raise a family, just getting through 30 years of being together as a couple is no day at the beach.Fox: A lot of people say Tracy's a rock, but she didn't cast herself in that role. I've gone through the challenges of Parkinson's, and I need her. She's the CEO of the operation.Leary: Our wives actually care enough to stop us and go, "All right, listen: Here's what you're doing wrong now."Fox: When I was writing my book [Always Looking Up] and I was way behind deadline, I was literally pulling my hair out and Tracy said, "What's the matter?" I said, "I'm never going to finish my book on optimism!" And she said, "What did you just say?" TV Guide Magazine: Why do you guys get along so well?Leary: We come from the same place. We came from nothing, our dads died early, we had tough moms, and we ended up as these things you're calling us - I don't think either of us thinks we're icons or innovators. So I admire and respect the way he's dealt with it. There's a load of bravery and a complete lack of self-pity about what he's done with his foundation. That's easy to admire, but behind the scenes, watching him as a dad and the way he handles himself is amazing.Fox: Thanks. My turn. With Denis, I think about writing, creating and producing a show like Rescue Me, and I don't have the brain cells for that. Then he steps in front of the camera and kicks ass. I'd be in my trailer taking a nap, eating some Cheetos, then walk out and do my bit. And then to have his foundation, which makes a tremendous difference. It saves lives. It's surprising that Denis is this brash, fun guy, but there's this amazing citizen, artist, creator and innovator - back to that word - who will always have my respect and admiration.Leary: Being a control freak with ADD really helps.
